Areca Palm with frost/freeze damage. Taken January 14, 2010 about 1 week after a hard freeze and several nights of frost. All or most of the fronds will die within another week and the plant will look pure brown. This plant had recovered to the current size in about 8 months from a similar event the previous year. You will need to wait until mid-March to determine if any stems have died. Dead stems will not produce new growth and will begin to rapidly rot. Cut them off as close to the base of the plant as possible and new stalks will grow back from the base. At the stage this picture was taken, the damage would appear the same from frost alone or from freeze damage. However, the palm will recover much more quickly from frost damage than from freeze damage.
