Bahia is a popular, low-maintenance lawn grass for infertile soils. Although bahia grass does not produce a high-quality, dense, dark green lawn like some other warm season grasses, it does provide a good, low-maintenance lawn where slightly reduced visual quality is acceptable.
Bahiagrass forms an extensive root system, which makes it one of our most drought-tolerant grasses. It also performs well in infertile, sandy soils. It has relatively few disease problems. Unfortunately, bahia is very susceptible to mole crickets, the primary insect problem for this type of grass. It does not have good tolerance to shade, traffic or saltwater and has very little cold tolerance. Proper fertilization is necessary to prevent yellowing and maintain pH balance. Bahia prefers acid or neutral pH soil and will not thrive in high pH levels.
With proper maintenance and care, Bahia will thrive in the Florida climate. With correct fertilization and protection against mole crickets, this grass type will last many years. |
