Misconception #1: You should wait as long as possible before you have your home or business professionally serviced for pest control problems.

This is false.  Pests multiply rapidly and if you see one there are probably plenty more in hiding.  Many pests produce egg sacks that contain numerous eggs.  For instance, the cockroach lays an egg sack containing approximately 15 to 30 baby cockroaches.  These baby cockroaches breed in as early as two weeks.  A pest infested structure will continually become more infested as long as you ignore the problem.  Over the counter sprays and pesticides may hlep slightly, but are not enough alone.  The longer you wait to have service the more those pests will multiply and the more difficult it will be to eliminate the problem.

Misconception #2:  The only reason to have your home serviced for pests is to get rid of visible infestations.

This is also false.  As you already know, for every pest you see there are multiples in hiding.  If you have one type of pest in your home then it's likely your home is a good breeding ground for other types of pest.  Not surprisingly, those pests build colonies and nurseries in between your walls, underneath your home, and in cracks and crevices you can't see.  Some of these pests can be poisonous and potentially dangerous.  Even if you currently haven't seen one of these pests, they can climb into your shoes, crawl into clothing, or hide in your bed sheets and surprise one of your loved ones with a venomous bite or sting.

What about pests you hardly ever see?  Termites are one example.  They remain in hidden voids.  You need a certified technician to identify and show you were potential termite infestation may occur.  Don't forget about carpenter ants, they too are very dangerous to structures.  Again, ask for a certified pest control technician to look over your structure.  Only then can you be sure you are protected and can prevent this type of infestation.

Misconception #3: One method of pest control is as good as another.

This is also false.  It would be easy to pick a pest control company or pest control method if this was the case, but this is not true.  Professional pest control companies should be certified.  In addition, they should have a yearly license renewal to keep up-to-date with the latest technology.  In many ways that certification is like a degree in pest control.  Ask to see the company's credentials and certification.  This certification cannot be bought.  It has to be earned through hours of education, testing and schooling.

A company who employs well trained and certified technicians will eliminate pest problems much more thoroughly than a non-certified person.  Professional technicians are trained to use the correct type of materials for each type of pest problem.  In addition, they are trained to eliminate pests from those hidden areas that are virtually impossible to reach unless your technician is a trained and certified professional.

Misconception #4:  Do-It-Yourself pest control works as good as hiring a professional pest control technician to treat your home or business?

You can purchase over the counter pesticides.  Some of these over the counter pesticides use products with ingredients and chemicals that merely attach the nervous system of the pest.  However, once this particular product dries, its effectiveness is completely gone.  In these cases the only pests it will affect are those who have direct contact with it while it's wet.  So, when you spray, for instance, a cockroach or two, those two will die but the 20 to 40 in hiding will be untouched, alive and multiplying rapidly.

Some people ask if the cockroach carries the chemical back to the nests of other cockroaches to kill them off.  Many of these materials don't work that way.  In fact, if the cockroach makes it back to the nesting area, the material has dried on its body.  It will not affect any other cockroaches.

When using pesticides on ants, you can make teh problem worse.  If you spray an anthill, for instance, the live ants carry a signal back to the colony.  The ants then spread to satellite colonies.  Thus, the ant hills are spread into numerous anthills.

There are industrial strength pesticides you can purchase from janitorial supply stores and other industrial retail locations.  The problem with that is some chemicals leave toxic residue that can remain poisonous for years.  This is a tremendous threat to your entire family.  In addition, some pesticides will not be the right prescription for the pest problem.  They can cause allergic and respiratory reactions if you don't know what you're using.  So the possibility here is that you might not eliminate the pests you need to eliminate and the toxic residue which may remain in your structure for years to come could harm those you love.

The most effective way to service your home is with a certified pest control technician.  General Household Pest Control from Lawn Care Extraordinaire

Chinch bugs are a threat to St. Augustine lawns especially during the hot, dry weather we often experience in Sarasota, Port Charlotte and Fort Myers.  These pests can cause damage by piercing the runners with their mouth parts, sucking sap, dehydrating your grass and injecting a poison.  Chinch bugs can and will destroy your whole lawn if allowed to multiply.  In addition, when a lawn is weakened by chinch bugs, it becomes a good candidate for fungus and weed problems.  These bugs don't exactly tap you on the shoulder and introduce themselves.  If you're worried you might have chinch bugs, please continue reading.

Signs of Damage

Signs of damage are first seen in sunny, dry areas and around the edges of your lawn.  Yellowing blades are quickly followed by spreading patches of grass.

Dry patches can often be mistaken for chinch bug damage and visa versa.  The "floating" method is the best way to determine what is causing the damage.  Place a bottomless can into the ground in an affected area.  Pour water into the can keeping it filled for 10 minutes.  If you have chinch bugs, they will start floating to the surface.  If you've checked for chinch bugs and are still not sure if you have them, contact a professional!

Bed bugs are nasty little insects that feed on human blood!  Some teypes may feed on animal blood as well.  Young bed bugs, or "nymphs", start as small as 1/32" (1mm) long and grwo to be about 1/4" as adults.  They tend to hide in cracks, crevices, mattress seams and bed frames.  They can also be found in corners of dressers or drawers and along the wall/carpet seams.

Having bed bugs does not mean that you have a dirty house.  Bed bugs often arrive on luggage from infested hotels, with house guests and in used furniture.  If you live in an apartment, they may have traveled from the unit next door.

Our Bed Bug Treatment is generally $250.00.  Schedule it Today!

Bed Bug Prevention Tips

1.   Check used mattresses and bed frames closely before bringing them into your home.

2.   Cooler temperatures result in a longer lifespan.

3.   Bites can be itchy.  Over the counter treatments for insect bites may be helpful to reduce the itchiness.

Let me start by saying that we at Lawn Care Extraordinaire have been through many, many freezes and cold snaps over the last 31 years.  We can help you figure out what to do to your lawn and other landscaping now that another arctic cold wave has struck Southwest Florida.

Lawn & Grass: Good News

Your good grass will suffer from the cold.  Blades will turn purple, yellow and brown and the overall look will deteriorate.  However, the cold should not permanently damage your St. Augustine.  We will continue to apply plenty of fertilizer to bring the Saint Augustine turf out of dormancy.  We will continue to apply weed control products until the weather gets too hot.

Most of the existing crabgrass that has been growing in your lawns is now probably dead.  Bermuda grass and nutsedge is also browned out.  Since we cannot control crabgrass or Bermuda grass in St.Augustine lawns, this is a good thing.  Now that the unwanted grasses are dead or totally stunted, your SaintAugustine can begin to thicken adn retake those arease in your lawn.  In areas where the crabgrass has died but where there is too little St. Augustine grass left, you may want to re-sod or have us install grass plugs to speed the recovery.

Trees, Shrubs & Landscaping: Bad News

Most or all of your "flowering" shrubs and trees haev probably been severely damaged by the freeze.  Hibiscus, alamanda, ixora and bouganvilla, common plants in Sarasota, Venice and Fort Myers, are teh type of plants that may be killed back to the ground in a sever freeze.  Many other plants that are suited to our rather tropical climate will also be damaged.  Tropical plams, flowering trees and fruit trees could be damaged as well.

If we are caring for your shrubs, we will begin applying a high quality, 100% slow-release granular fertilizer to all your shrubs.  This will gently begin feeding your plants which will help them recover far faster when warmer weather returns.  Since most of the foliage is damaged, we will not be spraying with insecticides until new growth, warmer weather and insects return.

Pruning

Resist the urge to prune away what appears to be dead in your shrubs and trees.  You should wait at least 3 weeks to assess how far the freeze damage goes into the plant.  Wait longer if you can.  We may yet get another cold front or two before the warmer March weather arrives.  If you can't stand the ugly appearance of your damaged shrubs, after 3 weeks you can remove some of the damaged plant material.  But, if you prune intp the healthy portion of the plant, this will trigger new budding and growth that will be very susceptible to another cold snap.  We do not recommend pruning into the healthy plant material until late February.  See our Pruning Page for more information.

For those of us who live in Bradenton, Osprey, Englewood, Punta Gorda, Rotonda or anywhere in between, we are accustomed to managing periods of drought, extreme rainfall and cold; many times all in the same year.  But it really is better than shoveling snow!
